The radishes at Hudson Guild sprouted

Initiatives · 2022–present
A waist-height planting bed that holds two months of water.

We built the first planter with members of the Hudson Guild Fulton Senior Center. They told us something we had not designed for: they had gardened for years and stopped, not because they lost interest, but because the beds were too low to reach comfortably and needed watering every single day.
So the bed sits at waist height and holds roughly two months of water. It went through more than a year of prototyping with residents and program directors before we delivered the first one in June 2023.
Three semi-corrugated pipes run under the soil and hold the water. A fill pipe in one corner is the only part anyone touches — you pour water in there until the pipes are full.
As the soil above dries out, water seeps through perforations along the length of the pipes and the roots draw it up. Nothing is pumped and nothing is powered. When the pipes run empty, you refill them, which works out to about once every two months.

August 2023
A few weeks after planting, the radishes were up and close to harvest, on a bed nobody had to water daily.

July 2023
We met with members to see how the planter was holding up, replanted radishes, and talked about the sub-irrigation systems we planned to build for other community centers.

July 2023
Filling the sub-irrigation system with water through the corner access pipe, then planting it out for the first time.

June 2023
We delivered the planter to the Hudson Guild Fulton Senior Center and set it up in the common room with the residents who had been prototyping it with us.

June 2023
We bought the birch and built the frame in the school maker workshop, weather-proofing every face before the sub-irrigation pipes went in.

May 2023
We modeled the frame, the sub-irrigation system and the access and drainage pipes before cutting any wood.
